Driving in the winter can sometimes be quite a chore, especially if the conditions deviate from our typical Irondale, AL climate. You may travel out of state for the holidays or take a much-deserved road trip to see the country. That’s why we are eager to provide several snow and ice tips with you today.
In some states, it is mandatory that drivers either have 4-Wheel Drive or carry snow chains. Think of the snow-flocked trees in the Northwest. Sure, it’s beautiful up there, but if the trees carry that much snow, just imagine what the roads are like! There are also many areas that don't control the use of chains, but rather recommend them in a slippery situation.
Many states put salt on the roads to increase traction. This can help but it has consequences, such as the cost of salt to cover every mile of road, or the corrosive properties of salt that can lead to rust on the under-body of your vehicle. Salt does come in handy when you need to back out of a snow- or ice-covered driveway when visiting relatives. Many people also now utilize kitty litter, and while this might work to give you the traction you need to pull out of a driveway, it can get really messy as the litter absorbs moisture. In a pinch, if you have to, sand will work to provide some additional traction but it does not melt ice.
We wish you safe and confident travels this winter, whether you travel up North or hang around the Irondale, AL region.
